BBC DG - Further Update

Wednesday, 14 November 2012

Further update – Peter Horrocks another BBC lifer has been thrust forward as a candidate with much internal support and a strong track record! Keep the coming!

Update - The kettle drums have been beating in SW6, SW1, W1 and W12 with decent well-informed gossip.  Andrew Neil, to all accounts – it’s 10 years too late, therefore not interested.  Also those that know the ROH’S Tony Hall well tell me that he is far too comfortable in WC2 to want to build another career and therefore create grief for himself.

Also a couple of media ‘luvvies’ have told me that there is a dark horse looming in the portals of Great Portland Street – one Roger Mosey – ex ‘Today’, ‘5-live’, and overall orchestrator of the fantastic coverage of the Olympics Games this year. He is currently deputy DG but keeping a low profile!  His profile may not be hiding under a bushel for too long!

“DIRECTOR GENERAL OF BBC – TOO BIG A JOB FOR ONE PERSON?”
Lord Patten, I think in private, would now be the first to admit that this job is too big a job for one person, particularly as the BBC is bedding itself down in new premises with many satellite offices such as Salford and Cardiff making the operation even more fragmented than it was. Tim Davie, the acting DG is an advertising man and one doesn’t really need ‘mensa’ qualifications to see that. He rocks up in public in an open necked shirt so laid back he is almost horizontal with the ground.  However I will give him his due, at least he does not appear to sport designer stubble in the manner his predecessor did.  The combination of being tie-less and unshaven would be too much for many. The BBC surely cannot be looking for a marketing man?  It is looking for a hard-nosed business person with some editorial flair and political savvy – a good communicator.  How many of those boxes Mr Davie ticks on a permanent basis remains to be seen. I think the appointee needs to be as tough as teak with oodles of charm.  Also you don’t walk away from an interview.  I may have him all wrong, but he wouldn’t be for me. He is the man in possession and deserves to be a skinny price.

I think Helen Boaden may not come under orders.  We still don’t know if she is resting or was asked to rest. I still like the idea of a really strong chairman/elderly statesman and an editor in chief.  I suspect Dimbleby & Hastings have ruled themselves out – both senior citizens.  Andrew Neil remains very somnolent on the subject. He knows the media backwards.  There are no flies on him, but he tends to call the spade a shovel.

Ed Richards is a worthy ‘jolly’ and would work well with Caroline Thompson or maybe even Lionel Barber of the FT.  Claire Spottiswoode ‘eats nails for breakfast and spits rust out.’ She would get the BBC back on the bridle. Dame Marjorie Scardino could fill that bill working either with Lionel Barber, who she knows well from FT days or Caroline Thompson.  I like the idea of Tony Hall, who has done a great job at the ROH, Covent Garden.  Sir Frank Chapman is an ‘off the wall’ selection.  However he is a deeply respected leader across the spectrum. This will only appeal if he feels he has made sufficient largesse at BG and is looking for a challenge.
